Santa Cruz Masters was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1989 (201c7). Our original founders were George and Tillie Cunningham, Scott Patterson, Paul Wrangell, Joel Wilson, Brooke Dick, and Kevin Petite.
Our purpose is to provide adult fitness swimming for the city, county, and university communities of Santa Cruz and to assist local aquatics-related organizations develop and grow.
To achieve this, we provide a consistent weekly workout schedule aimed at helping adults reach their swimming goals in a supportive and fun atmosphere. We complement these workouts with specialty clinics designed to improve the stroke technique of swimmers of all varieties, from those who only want to swim for exercise to those who plan to compete in the many pool, open water, and triathalon events available to Masters Swimming participants.
Our current roster lists 200+ swimmers. During the spring and summer seasons, about 100 people attend practices each day. During the fall and winter seasons, we see attendance of approximately 75 swimmers per day.
Santa Cruz Masters uses the pools at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Harbor High School, and Harvey West Park. We host at least one open water swim every year - the "Cruz Cruise," a two mile ocean swim. We also assist the local Surf-Lifesaving Association and the City of Santa Cruz with the administration of the one-mile Rough Water Swim. These two races typically take place over the same weekend in August each year.
ALL CRUZ SWIMMERS MUST BE REGISTERED WITH UNITED STATES MASTERS SWIMMING (USMS).
